CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE INTERACTIONS WITH WARFARIN (Coumadin, Jantoven)
Brand Name: Cytoxan, Neosar
The recently published reports deal with successful treatments of various conditions with combinations of warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) and cyclophosphamide. Some of the interaction lists had this as an undesirable interaction, however, this does not seem to be too important.
Nomura et al reported on a case of renal thrombotic microangiopathy associated with rheumatoid arthritis and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome that was successfully treated with this combination.
Iijima et al reported on 14 children with severe Henoch-Schonlein nephritis successfully treated with this combination and dipyridamole.
Tam and Li reported on successful treatment of pulmonary hypertension associated with systemic lupus and secondary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome using this combination and a vasodilator.
It would seem that pharmacists confronted with this combination of medications (particularly if prescribed by the same physician) would do well to consider this a desirable combination therapy rather than a deleterious interaction.
