The possibility of this interaction occurring was brought to my attention recently by one of the local, retail pharmacists who left a message on my clinic answering machine one night. He had just filled a prescription for a woman taking warfarin who had been prescribed doxycycline. The next day, I saw this woman and also a husband and wife who had been taking doxycycline and warfarin for about one week. This was three consecutive patients and their INRs were all in the desired range. So I wondered how often this interaction actually occurs. I checked Medline and found that the last article containing both words was published in 1980. Since these are both widely used medications and both have been on the market for over thirty years, I concluded that this is not a particularly troublesome interaction. There were a few reported cases of this interaction occurring before 1980, but I suspect that they had some confounding factor that was not recognized back then. I have seen dozens of patients using this combination, and have never seen an elevated INR, let alone any harm done from this. SEE A CATALOG OF PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE FROM LODWICK CREATIONS, LLC.
