FUROSEMIDE INTERACTION WITH WARFARIN |
||
| Brand Name:
Lasix
Furosemide is not usually thought of as being a medication which interacts with warfarin. However, I have seen some cases where a person had a great deal of swelling in their legs and their INR went down because they were given furosemide. Fluid build-up in the legs is a sign that the body is retaining too much water. This could be causing congestion in the liver also. When this congestion is relieved, blood flows through the liver more efficiently. This leads to increased metabolism of warfarin and a lower INR. This is not a true interaction but the net effect is the same. The warfarin dose may have to be increased. It is very important to remember that stopping an interacting medication can have adverse effects. Many people overlook this fact. Think of warfarin as sitting on one side of a teeter-totter. Whatever you do to one side will affect the other side.
