Warfarin Institute of America

DEDICATED TO YOUR HEALTH SINCE 2000

I was vacationing when sadly I developed a toothache.  The pain became intolerable while taking 400mg Ibuprofen quite regularly so I took a couple Oxycontin.  This morning my INR was 4.7.  Could either of these drugs caused the jump? - Smitty

No, neither oxycontin nor ibuprofen effect the blood levels of warfarin.  Ibuprofen does however affect your body’s ability to clot.  This is because ibuprofen causes the platelets in your blood to decrease in “stickiness.”  They are less apt to stick together or to your blood vessels, but this effect wears off after several hours.  This is a totally different mechanism from the way warfarin works, so it does not affect INR.
