HAIR LOSS WITH WARFARIN |
||
| Hair loss appears to be the most
common, warfarin-related side effect. I'm not aware of the exact
incidence, but it would to appear in about 1% of the people that I have
seen. It seems to be more common in women than men. This may not be true,
it may only be that women are more likely to mention it.
Some people have reported that it was severe. However, I do not recall any reports of complete hair loss. In every case, that I am aware of, the hair has eventually re-grown. One of my patients, who is hairdresser, reported that hers started to re-grow just about the time that she was getting frustrated enough to consider stopping the warfarin. Another lady who was in her seventies when she started warfarin, had her hair suddenly stop growing. She was conscious of this because she had regularly had a hair cut every month all of her life. She then did not need one for several months. When the re-growth started it was much lighter and more curly than previously. However, after a few months like this it returned to being similar to her pre-warfarin days. This is from Bonnie Tharpe of Eufaula, Alabama btharpe@thelink.net
"I have been taking 15mg. a day of
coumadin since 1990.
I have not noticed hair loss, although my
hair is waist long and seems to had stopped growing about the time I
started taking coumadin. I have had only 1 hair cut/trim since 1990.
No thinning.
I also have witnesses, which is my
daughters and my ex husband that can vouch for it. Before I started on
the coumadin my hair was rapidly growing the normal growth rate.
If someone was to contact me I would
surely say, yep, its me and I did say it and I can prove it with
witnesses.
Maybe it was from the high dosage of the
15mg. a day for over 14 years, I think the majority of people on
coumadin only take about 2/10mg. a day."
This is from Perlie Here's my story. I finished chemo January 2004, needless to say after 8 rounds, which made no change I went on 4 rounds of Taxodere. It was brutal but worked and of course I lost all of my hair. After months of complaining that I didnt think my hair was coming back quickly enough, it finally has arrived although not as thick as I would have liked in the front. I am not cured but stable and still receiving IV treatments and bloodwork and since my veins dried up I had to have a portacathe implaced. Therefore.... so hence the warfarin to prevent blood clots. 1/2 of a 2.5 mg. Small huh? I have been on warfarin since Sept. 2004, albeit a very low dose but I'm convinced that it is hindering the growth of my luscious thick hair. I am also on Femara which also could promote hair loss, but I feel that since I started the warfarin I have definetly noticed a slow down in the growth on the top of my head. I am convinced it is the warfarin. Three months later Perlie wrote again. Well Ive been off Warfarin for over 2 months now, since March 3rd. Thought I would give it some time before i contacted you. Yes, I definetly notice hair growth. It's filling in around the front of my scalp line, my widows peak all around the front, short fuzzy little hairs are very noticable. I don't notice any hair stubble on the top though where it is the only place that hasnt grown in thick like it used to be. Oh and by the way, my hair is only aboutn4-5 inches long after a year and 4 months off of chemo. I was on CEF then Taxodere. I believe the Taxodere was the damaging factor. If you have an interesting story about your hair after you started taking warfarin, I would be interested in hearing from you. SEE A CATALOG OF PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE FROM LODWICK CREATIONS, LLC.
