INDOMETHACIN INTERACTION WITH WARFARIN
There are no reliable reports written in the past ten years in any medical journal detailing anyone who was ever harmed by this interaction. A reader has sent in the following report which details a fatal outcome for someone taking this combination. I would like to stress that cause and effect is not proven here. It is published so that others can have more information in making a decision whether or not to take this combination.
Dad had been taking Warfarin for some years. He was prescribed Indomethacin by the GP to reduce the swelling in his foot - gout. He started taking the Indomethacin on Saturday afternoon, 29 November 2003. On Sunday afternoon, I arrived at his house to find him collapsed on the kitchen floor. He had vomited a large amount of dark blood and, as far as I could gather, was barely conscious. I called the emergency services. They helped him breathe but I believe his heart had stopped. They rushed him to hospital but shortly afterwards we were told that he was dead. A Post-mortem examination was carried out and on the Death Certificate causes of death were 1. Right Cerebral Haemorrhage and 2. Hypertension. He had been to the hospital on Friday 28 November for a blood test which was OK. I spoke to him late Saturday afternoon and he said that the swelling in his foot was already reducing. He sounded fine and didn't mention any other ailments.

If Anne's Dad had not had a post-mortem, this would seem to be exactly what is feared would happen when someone mixes this combination, a bleed into the gastrointestinal tract. However, that is not what the post-mortem showed.
