MELOXICAM INTERACTIONS WITH WARFARIN |
||
| Brand Name: Mobic
Meloxicam is a relatively new medication in the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. When it was under development, it was tested on healthy volunteers to see if it had any interaction with warfarin. Turck et al reported that it did not. However, the US Food and Drug Administration required a precaution statement in the official package insert that it could raise the INR and advising monitoring the INR when starting or changing therapy. I would not disagree with this, but there is a much more important reason to avoid this combination. The first entry in the warnings section of the package insert says, "Serious gastrointestinal toxicity such as ... bleeding ... can occur at any time with or without symptoms..." If this happens and you are taking warfarin, a minor bleed can quickly develop into something worse. There are other, safer pain relievers, so I would avoid this combination.
