METHIMAZOLE INTERACTIONS WITH WARFARIN |
||
|
Brand Name: Tapazole DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS INTERACTION . THIS IS NOT A VERY COMMONLY PRESCRIBED MEDICATION, SO NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS INTERACTION. THIS INTERACTION COULD HAVE LIFE-THREATENING IMPLICATIONS. If methimazole is started (or the dose increased) in someone already taking warfarin, then the INR will be expected to drop. This could reach levels the same as if the person was not taking warfarin. If a person has their INR regulated on a combination of warfarin and methimazole, and the methimazole dose is decreased, there is a possibility that the INR will go high enough to cause bleeding. It is very common to make several adjustments to the dose of methimazole. This can put the INR on a roller-coaster that can take six months before the warfarin dose is again stabilized. The INR may need to be checked every week or two until the warfarin dose stabilizes. For a discussion of the mechanism of this interaction, click here.
