NABUMETONE INTERACTION WITH WARFARIN |
||
|
Brand Name: Relafen Nabumetone has been thought to be the preferred non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug when people are taking warfarin. This is because it has less effect on the platelets in the blood and less effect on the lining of the stomach than others in its class. However, this does not mean that there is no reason to be concerned about the combination. Dr. Vincent Dennis and colleagues report the case of a 72-year-old man who was taking warfarin for atrial fibrillation and had nabumetone started for osteoarthritis of his hand. One week later the INR had increased mildly to 3.7. Later that same day, pain and swelling in his knee. Three times in the next six days he had blood drawn out of his knee joint. When he was found to have a normal heart rhythm, the warfarin was discontinued. He had no further bleeding episodes. The authors urge caution and close monitoring when the two agents are used together. Reference: Dennis VC et al. Potentiation of Oral Anticoagulation and Hemarthrosis Associated Nabumetone.
