OXOLAMINE INTERACTION WITH WARFARIN (Coumadin, Jantoven)

Brand Name: Kalamin

Oxolamine is not approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration so it is not available to our readers in the US.  It is widely used as a cough suppressant in many other countries.  A report from Korea by Min et al found that when oxolamine was started by people taking warfarin, a 50% reduction in the warfarin dose may be necessary to maintain a steady INR.  This is enough to cause a serious increase in the risk of bleeding.  It is very important that people taking warfarin have their INR checked within a few days after starting oxolamine.  Likewise it will be important to return to the previous warfarin dose after oxolamine is stopped.
