THE QUESTION OF THE DAY

I have been taking warfarin for a long time.  If I start garlic, ginkgo, or ginger for blood thinners, can I adjust my dose of warfarin down to account for them? -- Bill

Not really.  Warfarin works on the fibrin clotting system in the blood.  Garlic, ginkgo, and ginger work on the platelet clotting system.  There is no way to test to see what equivalent clotting inhibition is produced by these agents.  They may add to the risk of bleeding when given with warfarin but by how much we do not know either.
