THE QUESTION OF THE DAY

I have been taking warfarin for six years and my INR is usually in-range.  Today it was 4.4.  My doctor told me to change multivitamins to one that had no vitamin K and stop eating so many veggies.  Does this make sense? --  DM

Your doctor must have been having a bad day because this is exactly backwards.  If you decrease your vitamin K intake and keep the warfarin dose constant, then the INR will increase.  I am reminded of something my mother told me, "Remember that every class has someone who finishes last." One time the student who finished last in his class at West Point was asked if anyone famous ever finished last in his class.  The answer, "Yes sir, George Armstrong Custer."
