INR Self-Testing from Raytel

THE QUESTION OF THE DAY

When I went home from the hospital, the doctor told me to drink two cans of Ensure every day.  I did for about a month, then I stopped it last week.  Today I went for my INR test and the level was 7.9.  The person who did the test said that this was probably due to my stopping Ensure.  How do you explain this?  -- RS

Ensure and many other nutritional supplements and meal replacements (Boost, Carnation Instant Breakfast, Slim-Fast Luna bars etc) are loaded with vitamin K.  Vitamin K causes the body to produce blood clotting factors.  Warfarin works against vitamin K.  When you stopped the Ensure, you took in less vitamin K and therefore your body produced less clotting factors.  Since you did not lower your warfarin (Coumadin, Jantovcn) intake, the INR went dangerously high.
