Scuba Diving While Taking Warfarin |

| I am an avid diver and
certified dive master and yes I take warfarin. Almost one year ago to the
day I was released from a hospital in Barcelona Spain (which is where I
lived for a couple of years until a few weeks ago) after being diagnosed
with DVT and Pulmonary Embolism. I am also very young for someone having
DVT and PE and I am in excellent physical condition which of course had me
asking the question "how did this happen to me?". The age and
the health really helped with my recovery. Of course, after my concerns
for my family, I was very worried that I was never going to be able to
dive again. It actually took me about three or four days to get enough
courage up to ask my attending in the hospital about my future quality of
life and ability to dive as I was very worried that I would get the answer
I did not want to hear. Well surprise, he actually said that he expected
me to make a strong recovery and actually be able to dive again. When I
told him that I usually breath Nitrox when diving he informed me that this
was even better. He indicated that PE pediatric patients are treated with
Nitrox. I may be an unusual case. I think someone who has questionable
health conditions might have gotten a different answer. I returned to
diving in August last year (four weeks in the Bahamas chasing Great
Hammerheads and Tiger sharks, which made for a great return to the water).
