SUCRALFATE INTERACTION WITH WARFARIN |
||
| Brand Name: Carafate
Rey and Gums reported a case where digoxin, quinidine and warfarin all were less absorbed after a person started taking sucralfate. After the sucralfate was discontinued, the absorption returned to normal. It seems rather unusual that there is only this one report in the medical literature. Perhaps this interaction does not occur too often. However, is a person's INR decreases after they have been on a stable dose of warfarin, it might be worth investigating if sucralfate has been added to their list of medications. Sucralfate coats the lining of the stomah, so it is quite possible that this is a significant interaction, Reference: Rey AM, Gums JG. Altered Absorption of Digoxin, Sustained-relaease Quinidine and Warfarin with Sucralfate administration. DICP 1991;25:745-746. Editor's Note: It has been thirteen years since this article was published and as of November 2004, there are no reports of anyone being harmed by this interaction.
