ZAFIRLUKAST INTERACTIONS WITH WARFARIN
When the research was being done to bring this drug on the market, it was discovered that it had the potential to interfere with an enzyme involved in the metabolism of warfarin. Thus, it has the potential of increasing the INR if someone was already taking warfarin and started zafirlukast. However, a Medline search for articles published about this actually happening turned up nothing. Since zafirlukast is a fairly popular medication, I think there should have been some reports of this interaction by now, if it actually occurs.
It does not seem like routine screening for this interaction is necessary for everyone who takes zafirlukast. However, if there is an unexplained rise in the INR and the person started taking zafirlukast, then the possibility that this interaction occurred should be considered.
